I love metaphors. A few days ago on I scrolled by a meme on Facebook related to autism awareness.  It got me thinking about eating disorders and brain science and my work with F.E.A.S.T., and I thought it would be a great title for a blog entry, so here goes… I’m sorry to disappoint anyone, but this isn't going to be a blog on neuroscience or technology or even directly about eating disorders - it’s about advocacy and relationship building and how F.E.A.S.T. works to support our mission and achieve our goals. I have been puzzled by the latest flurry of "old vs new" attitudes between ED advocacy groups with similar goals which is occurring on social media. Of course some groups are older than others, but that doesn't mean that a "new" approach is any better than another group's "old" approach. Friday Reflection: Just Keep Going

By Hannah Joseph Hope is a reason to take action, to make a plan and then to change the plan when it isn't working.... I’m never sure where to start when I tell my story. I was a severely anxious and overly-sensitive child with recurring nightmares, OCD-like rituals, and a host of sensory issues. I remember having body dysmorphic thoughts and feelings as early as 4 years old. At 13, my anxiety was replaced by the severe depression that would be my near constant companion for the next 10 years. My path into my eating disorder started at 14 with restricting my food intake so I wouldn’t gain weight after giving up the sports I had been active in my whole life. My weight fluctuated for the next three years as I alternated between restricting and over-eating but never enough that anyone noticed. PARENT PERSPECTIVES: IN PRAISE OF PANIC

I woke in the night, my heart pounded erratically, nightmare rising in my throat, deafened by the silent primal scream. In the daytime my sweating hands slipped off the computer keys while I researched treatment centers, recovery rates, high calorie recipes, amenorrhea and perfectionism. Ironically, I couldn’t eat. I made appointments and yelled at a nurse, parked my car cattywampus in specialty grocery stores, and barely restrained myself from pulling my hair out in fistfuls.
