Confirming the new team at F.E.A.S.T. HQ - notes from the Board

Following our first meeting of 2017, and on behalf of the Board at F.E.A.S.T., I am delighted to confirm that we have made a successful transition of the Executive Team here at F.E.A.S.T. central, and we have a "new" name among us following our most recent meeting.

Belinda Caldwell is confirmed as our Executive Director and will be joined in office by Laura (Collins) Lyster-Mensh taking over the reins as our new Outreach Director.  Laura needs no introduction from me here, having been a founder of F.E.A.S.T. and an active, stalwart member of the Board over a period of many years.   Needless to say, we are thrilled and excited to have her on board.

The rest of the Executive Team comprises myself as Chair, Nicki Wilson as Secretary, Siobhan McGurk as Treasurer, and Lisa LaBorde as Vice Chair.

Leah Dean has requested a leave of absence from the Board now that the new team is properly bedded in and she (finally!) has the opportunity to take a very well earned rest, and the Board has recorded a hearty and unanimous vote of thanks to her for her years of dedicated service to the organisation as its Executive Director.

The Executive Team look forward to further serving the organisation and to working with the families, volunteers, advocates and friends who form its lifeblood, its audience, and the power behind its engines.  We also hope to be able to include you all in some exciting developments that we have planned for the coming months.   You will no doubt be hearing from Belinda and Laura shortly as they bring you up to speed on all that they are busy doing.

The team at the Victorian Centre of Excellence in Eating Disorders are currently developing an early intervention resource package in direct response to feedback provided by parents and carers. The aim is to have the package available for families and carers at the first point where they seek help. This resource specifically aims to assist parents or carers to determine how concerned they should be about their young person; what eating disorders are and are not; when to escalate access to treatment; where to seek treatment and what to expect; and what parents can be doing at home in the meantime. A focus group was undertaken with 15 parents and they are now wanting to expand on the very valuable learnings gleaned from the group through wider survey. Can FBT Strategies be used for early Eating Disorder intervention and prevention?

Eating Disorders are serious mental illnesses with dangerous medical consequences.   Without early intervention, eating disorders may become chronic or even fatal.    Parents are often unaware of some of the early signs of an eating disorder.   Even if they are aware of early warning signs, they are often uncertain and reluctant to intervene out of fear of worsening the situation.   Maudsley Family Based Treatment (FBT) is one of the leading evidence-based treatments for adolescents with eating disorders.   Studies are underway to evaluate the effectiveness of early interventions using an FBT approach.
